What Does a Life Coach Do Exactly?

Think about all the things that make you, you.  Your health, your habits, your relationships, your career, the way you feed your mind, body, and soul.

Feeling stuck or overwhelmed in one aspect of our lives can mean we feel stuck or overwhelmed in other aspects of our lives.  Without clarity on personal and professional priorities, values, and goals we can start to feel disenchanted with our current state.

Enter the life coach – a professional equipped with the tools to help individuals step into their full potential.  On the journey of personal and professional development, individuals seeking guidance, support and accountability in navigating life's challenges could benefit from partnering with a life coach.  In doing so you may unearth your magic – the secret sauce that makes you, you.

But what exactly does a life coach do, and how can they make a meaningful impact on one's life? What can you expect in your sessions?  What would the outcome be? Let's illuminate the role of a Life Coach and explore the transformative role one could play in your personal and professional growth in this year.

The Role of a Life Coach

At life coach is a trained professional who collaborates with clients to identify and achieve their personal development goals and professional growth. Unlike therapy, which often focuses on exploring your history, relationships, or ongoing behavioural patterns (including mental health challenges), life coaching is future-oriented, aiming to empower individuals to create a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life.

As Jay Shetty said on the podcast Armchair Expert, “Therapy helps you make sense of your past, coaching helps you build your future.  Together they make a really good recipe for a healthy life.”  (listen to the full episode here)

Life coaches work with clients from various walks of life, addressing a wide range of areas, including career, relationships, health, and ways to create lasting and positive change.

What to Expect from Your Life Coaching Sessions

Life coaching sessions are never one-size-fits-all as they are based on each indivdual client's needs and desires.  I empower my clients to get really clear on their goals so together we can identify what they want to accomplish and articulate what they will need to address to achieve what they set out to.

Below are some aspects of a life coaching engagement that clients can expect as they turn challenges into opportunities, setbacks into stepping stones, and dreams into tangible achievements.

Goal Setting, Refinement and Clarity

Unraveling the intricacies of personal ambitions, life coaches specialize in helping clients articulate and refine their short-term and long-term goals. Through thoughtful questioning and active listening, coaches help individuals gain clarity on what outcome they truly envision for themselves.

I don’t use SMART goals in my life coaching sessions, instead asking my clients how they want to feel or to tap into their unique vision of success, then using that as a north star to develop a map that can be navigated throughout our sessions together.

Strategic Action Planning

Once goals are defined, life coaches collaborate with clients to develop actionable plans. This may involve breaking down larger objectives into smaller, manageable steps, creating a roadmap for success.  This becomes a practical guide to turn clients’ aspirations into reality.

My aim is that clients step away from our sessions together with inspired actions, rather than a list of to-dos.  This action plan can be anchored to a broader goal, the client’s values and/or priorities.  In doing so clients begin to alchemize their life – a process of transforming the ordinary aspects of life into the extraordinary.

Accountability and Motivation

Accountability forms the backbone of the coaching relationship. From setting deadlines to providing motivation, life coaches play a crucial role in holding clients responsible for their commitments.

Accountability fosters consistency and propels clients towards achieving their desired outcomes and can come in all forms.  For my clients this looks like celebrating wins inside of our sessions, but I also encourage clients to communicate with me in between sessions for additional accountability.  Clients send texts like “rocked the presentation this morning” or “I’m doing a deep dive and will be ready for some feedback during our session next week.”

Other times, clients are offered tools and resources in between sessions to deepen their accountability and hold on to the motivation that occurred within our 1:1 session(s).

Navigating Obstacles and Challenges

Life's journey is rarely smooth, and obstacles are inevitable. Life coaches support clients in identifying and overcoming real and perceived challenges, offering strategies to navigate setbacks and turn them into opportunities for growth.

Clients can expect to practice articulating possible obstacles or challenges in their sessions and potential solutions with the support of a life coach.  In addressing potential obstacles or challenges inside of the 1:1 coaching container, clients are able to solidify a plan while receiving support.  This is like strength training – building muscle and resilience with the support of their life coach, before needing to use it in the real world.

Mindset Shifts

Shifting limiting beliefs and fostering a positive mindset is a transformative aspect of life coaching.  Coaches guide individuals in reframing their perspectives, embracing a mindset that propels them towards their version of success.

Sometimes mindset shifts come as a reframe of how clients see themselves in the world, other times this is identifying what is in our control and what isn’t. One of my favourite client testimonials says, “…in my sessions with Kristell, I realized I dream in stages and that my biggest dream is a feeling, not a thing.

How’s that for a mindset shift?

Skill Building with Your Life Coach

Life coaches often focus on developing specific skills and habits that contribute to personal and professional growth. Skills you may develop in your life coaching sessions include:

  • Communication Mastery:  Effective communication is the cornerstone of personal and professional success. Life coaches foster their clients’ ability to articulate thoughts clearly, actively listen, and navigate diverse social interactions.

  • Time Management Expertise: Life coaches help clients assess their current time allocation, identify inefficiencies, and develop strategies to optimize their schedules. Through this, individuals can enhance productivity and create space for pursuits aligned with their aspirations and values.

  • Stress Resilience Techniques:  Learning how to manage stress is a skill that can significantly impact one's well-being. A life coach may provide clients with stress resilience techniques, empowering them to navigate challenges with poise, maintain focus under pressure, and cultivate more balance.

  • Emotional Intelligence Development:  Life coaches work with clients to enhance their emotional intelligence, fostering self-awareness, empathy, and effective emotional expression. This skill is integral for navigating various life scenarios with grace and authenticity.

  • Problem-Solving Strategies:  Life coaches are adept at guiding clients through the intricacies of problem-solving. Whether facing personal or professional challenges, coaches help individuals develop effective strategies for critical thinking, decision-making, and overcoming obstacles. This skill-building process enables clients to approach challenges with confidence and resilience.

  • Continuous Learning and Adaptability:  The ability to commit to lifelong learning is a skill that ensures sustained success and adaptability.  This is not about acquiring competencies; it's about empowering individuals with a comprehensive range of abilities, enabling them to thrive across the aspects of life.

Empowered Outcomes from Life Coaching Sessions

When thinking about what you hope to resolve by engaging the help of a Life Coach, here are some empowered (and empowering!) outcomes from 1:1 Coaching Sessions:

1. Clarity and Focus: Life coaching provides individuals with a clear sense of direction, helping them focus on what truly matters to them.  Having a clear path usually leads to a life filled with contentment – really knowing what matters to us and why means we are laser focused on making aligned choices.

2. Increased Confidence:  Through goal achievement and personal growth, clients often experience a boost in self-confidence and self-trust.  This confidence leads to feeling more enchanted with life, as though the path is opening in front of you with more ease.

3. Enhanced Decision-Making: Coaches assist in developing effective decision-making skills, empowering clients to make choices aligned with their values and aspirations.  Less stuck, more empowerment!

4. Improved Relationships: Life coaching can positively impact personal and professional relationships by fostering better communication, empathy, and conflict resolution skills.  Often this starts with your relationship to yourself – deeper self-compassion, kinder self-talk, a deeper vision for what truly matters to you.

In a world filled with challenges and opportunities, it’s easy to lose sight of ourselves. A life coach serves as a valuable ally on the journey to self-discovery and personal achievement. By providing support, guidance, and accountability, these professionals empower individuals to design a life that reflects their truest aspirations. Whether navigating career transitions, improving relationships, or pursuing personal growth, a life coach can be a catalyst for positive change, helping individuals unearth their magic and live a more fulfilling life.
